Heartfelt words, many smiles and the cutting of a ribbon marked the official opening of the new Vetipak facility in Veghel last week. The event also marked the “relaunch” of the cooperation between Mars and Vetico, which has flourished for almost 28 years now.
Employees from various departments of Mars and Vetico were welcomed to the brand new Vetipak factory, which has been fully designed and equipped for the chocolate company. As we walked through the production facility, we reflected on the past, looked to the future, and most importantly, celebrated this special moment together.
“A stronger future than ever”
CEO Jeroen van Herpen gave the opening address. “This is our next major step since the start of our special partnership in 1997,” he said. “The plant is about twice the previous size and offers plenty of possibilities and options, with fifteen docks and space to expand the number of lines. We are also taking a giant leap forward in terms of sustainability. In fact, our aim is to be operating in a climate-neutral way by next year. This plant provides the foundation for an even stronger future together.”
Co-packing is critical
Jack Tabbers, Regional Cluster General Manager at Mars, also addressed the attendees. “Co-packing is critical for us. The most sustainable innovation aimed at meeting consumer needs stems from packaging solutions. We have enough strong, appealing brands and product solutions, and these can only be further enhanced by innovative packaging solutions. In this respect, we are confident about counting on Vetico’s innovative power, flexibility and focus on solutions.”
Jack went on to say, “That’s why it’s so important that we’re here together. Our Veghel site is a special part of the Mars network, not only due to its scale, but also in terms of enterprise. For example, the idea for our latest ‘brand’, Celebrations, was born here. Together with Vetipak, we have been able to offer this in many packages to suit various ‘need states’, such as birthdays, Mother’s Day, exams, and a gift if you’ve been traveling. We worked together to develop and scale up a packaging solution for all of these moments.”
Tour of the factory
Then it was the factory’s turn to take center stage. The tour was what everyone had been looking forward to. “We’re proud to show off the new building, and Mars employees love seeing all the lines working,” said Jeroen. Sam de Frates, director of procurement at Mars, agrees. “It was great to actually experience this after all the conversations about it. We could already rely on committed people, and now a shiny new factory too. It’s a huge step forward.”
The future
The tour ended with the ribbon cutting. Naturally, this took place at the newest addition: the centerpiece line. Afterwards, the delegations from the two companies discussed the future. “We’ll carry on challenging each other to maintain a smarter, better and more sustainable approach,” said Jeroen. “With the new plant as a springboard, we’re ready for just as strong a future. Here’s to the next 28 years!”
