At Vetico, we believe that it’s important to invest in sustainability. Even though the mandatory Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) has been postponed, we’ve chosen to keep moving forward with our own approach. As a result, we have now defined 11 themes and a large number of KPIs. Manager Finance Rick Vaes is our resident expert.
In a previous blog post, we discussed the 11 sustainability themes. The KPIs arose from these, explains Rick. “There are dozens of them, such as comprehensive KPIs on waste generation, innovation or human resources. We also have a number of stand-alone KPIs. A good example is pallet efficiency. In an optimal scenario, a pallet would have a 100 percent load factor. To achieve this, however, everything must be absolutely perfect. Therefore, as well as measuring our load factor, we’re also going to look at how we can increase that percentage. We do this together with our customers, for example by examining packaging dimensions and optimizing them.”
Collaboration is key
Just as with the 11 sustainability themes, we determined the KPIs in consultation with our management and with the responsible employees. While the results of some KPIs are relatively easy to measure (for example, energy consumption), others are more complicated. Rick: “An example is the KPI on the sustainability of packaging. This is often packaging that a customer has purchased themselves, so we don’t always know what it consists of, and have limited influence on that. Collaboration is therefore also very important here. And if a customer engages us to provide the full service for their job, including the packaging, then we obviously have that data too.”
Interesting cross connections
We combine all of the KPIs and associated data in Lucanet, a tool that helps us record, monitor and report. “You can consider Lucanet as an encompassing shell within which we house all of the underlying data sources. This method will soon enable us to report perfectly in accordance with CSRD guidelines. Lucanet also allows us to make some great cross connections, such as expressing our energy consumption per thousand consumer units, or investigating whether the average pallet value increases if the load factor improves. Through Lucanet, we can make everything clear.”

We are on track
The introduction of the CSRD reporting requirement has been postponed. But at Vetico, compliance has never been the driving force. Sustainability is embedded in the way we work, and that’s why we’re pressing ahead regardless. “Absolutely. We are now clear on how we want to measure almost all KPIs, and what adjustments are necessary to tackle the last of the KPIs too. In fact, our accountant, who will be auditing our CSRD reporting, was already brought into our process and developments back in January. That’s a great confirmation of our proactive approach! And we will use her advice and recommendations to account for how we will eventually report on all of the KPIs. In short, we are right on track.”
